Abstract
The process comprises continuously reacting, in a single generator/evaporator/crystalliser, an alkali metal chlorate and chloride and H2SO4 opt. mixed with HCl or H3PO4 (2N-4N acidity) at 65-85 degrees C. in the presence of a catalyst from vanadium pentoxide or ions of Ag, Mn, As or bichromate. Under a pressure of 100-400 mm. Hg, water is evaporated to give a gas prod. contg. ClO2, Cl2 and water. From the reactor an aq. slurry contg. crystallised salts is passed down a sepg. column up which water is passed. The soln. contg. chlorate, chloride and acid is recycled to the reactor and at the base is slurry of substantially pure sodium sulphate is recovered. The column comprises packing for at least 30% of the height and spacing of which there is at least 10% at the base of the column. The packing is composed of several parallel layers which are in undulating form. The undulations in adjacent layers are in intermittent contact and the interface contact angle is 90 degrees. ClO2 is used for bleaching fats, paper pulp and textiles also for purificn. of water and the recovery of phenols from industrial wastes. The process enables the levels of chlorate, chloride and H2SO4 impurities in the recovered sulphate to be kept at about 0.2-0.25% for long operating periods.
