Abstract

The effluent is passed through a bed based on divided keratinous material to fix the pollutant by adsorption an hydrophobic linkages. In a pref. embodiment, the keratinous material is satd. with the effluent, compressed to a compact block which is then incinerated. The process is esp. applied to aq. effluent contg. phenols or detergents or to waste oil contg. decomposition products. Other applications are to effluent from the photographic, surface treatment, chlorine and mirror industries. Because of the cheap materials used, the process is economic. The keratinous material is pref. ground feathers, hoof or horn, or waste wool esp. a carbonised waste contg. wool fibre and carbonised cellulosic dust; or animal or human hair, fibre of silk, or waste skins, esp. leather or rabbits skins. A fixed bed of material is pref. used which is pref. packed prior to use.
