Abstract

Rotary drum submerged by a quarter of its dia. has on its surface brushes which disengage the oil from the water, from below upwards, forms the active element of a device for scavenging hydrocarbons from the surface of the sea. Typically the cylinder is 1500mm in dia. and 3m wide. It is driven by a motor through a transmission including a redn. gear. The bristles of the brushes are e.g. 25-30 cm long and the oil is stripped from them by an obliquely inclined doctor blade heated by the exhaust gases of the motor. The barge container to which the drum is attached by protective beams, is e.g. 7m long and 3500mm wide, and the carrying of a large proportion of sea water with the gathered oil is prevented.
