Abstract

The highway ice detection system has a sensor which includes a salt concentration unit. The sale concentration unit determines the salt concentration in an aqueous solution spread on the highway. An indicator gives a display of the salt concentration or the corresp. freezing point. The detector (11) is positioned at the set distance from the road surface (13) and receives the saline solution (13) via a collector which includes a collecting wheel (72, 81). The collecting wheel (72) has fixed dimension and cooperates with a transfer roller (44) and scraper (75). The collecting wheel may be a wheel (81) of a vehicle (87). The collector assembly includes a collector plate (80) which gathers water projected from the wheel (81).
