Abstract
A notch is made in the silica core of the fibre, followed by applying a tensile stress along the longitudinal axis of the fibre to cause fracture at the notch. The notch is pref. made by a diamond tool pressed against the fibre in a direction at 90 degrees to the axis. The pref. appts. consists of a bedplate carrying a stationary platform and a mobile platform. Both platforms have a V-groove on their top surface in which the fibre is place and clamped in position by a pair of toggle clamps operated by finger pressure. A finger button presses the diamond against the fibre, and a hand lever is used to move the mobile platform away from the stationary platform, thus applying traction causing fracture. A smooth cut surface is obtd. on the end of the fibre without the need for polishing, so the fibre can be directly linked to an opto-electronic device.
