Abstract

The cigarettes contg. mint leaves are prepd. by first boiling the mint leaves in water for 10 min. to several hrs. to extract most of the aromatic substances they contain. The opt. mixed with tobacco leaves are then treated in the usual manner for tobacco to produce cigarettes. The cigarettes obtd. when smoked have the normal flavour of menthol tobacco but with no or reduced toxicity due to the reduced or zero nicotine content. When tobacco is added the prodn. method is pref. according to taht used for the particular variety of tobacco. The pref. amt. of tobacco is 0-20%. The amt. of water used in the treatment is pref. reduced by using a perforated plate or grill to hold the leaves below the water. The aq. extract is pref. evaptd. to recover a water-soluble mint infusion.
