Abstract

A control system is used to determine the profile of the cutting face in a mine. It is used with a face cutter which travels back and forth along the face to be cut. The system equipment has a set of mirrors (12) positioned along the line to be followed by the cutter (10, 11). A light source and a light receiver (16) is fitted to the moving cutter (10). Another mirror (13) is located at the end of the line to be followed. The equipment has a control circuit which determines the angular position of each mirror from a reference position. It also has a computing circuit to determine the profile to be cut along the mine face (1). A further circuit determines the distance travelled by the cutter (11).
