Abstract

The lock or padlock may be operated by more than one key, and different locks may be opened by a common "master" key as used in hotels. Concentric cylinders are prevented from rotating relative to each other by spring-biased "tumblers" lodged in slots in the cylinder walls. Each tumbler has an oblique cut which produces surfaces which either slide over each other and correspond or lie with pointed ends touching and increase the depth of penetration of the tumbler rod into the key aperture. Orientation of these oblique surfaces may be changed by inserting a key and rotating it through 180 deg.. This alters the pattern of indentations in the key required to open the lock.
