Abstract

False-twisted or bulked polyester yarns are weft-knitted into a fancy trellis fabric structure having gathered stitches, for use as bed coverings. The bulked polyester filaments of 2.0-5.0 decitex, when knitted into the fabric structure, require no supplementary finishing treatments to achieve and acceptable handle. In an example, an air-bulked, melt-spun PET yarn of 305 decitex and 48 filaments is drawn, false-twisted and heat-set on a Scragg 370 VX Mark I machine. The yarn is knitted on a flat back V-bed 10 gauge Dubbed DC2 machine to a width of 170-175 cms. The machine is adjusted to knit the trellis structure, with two warp yarns per yarn feed. The knit fabric is washed, dyed, rinsed, acid sweetened, and heat-set. The gathered stitch knitted fabric provides a gentle, bulky handle and a pleasing appearance, similar to natural fibre fabrics.
