Abstract

Automatic welding machine for welding two contiguous sheets for forming part of a sealed tank for liquid hydrocarbons etc. has rolls to permit the machine to be supported by and movable on the sheets. A plate presses the rolls onto the sheets even when the machine has stopped or is subjected to a disengaging force. Two welding wheels are associated with the current supply and a pressure control controls the pressure exerted by the wheels on the edges. There are means for cooling the periphery of the wheels. Two opposed mill rolls are behind and level with the welding wheels and are associated with pressure control for controlling the mill rolls on the edges, on the weld seam, as well as motor. The mill rolls also provide a drive and guide for the machine along the junction between the sheet edges. The machine is safer, more durable, easier to use, more versatile and capable of providing better weld quality than existing machines.
