Abstract

A light emitting diode (1) and a receiving diode (2) are mounted with their axes parallel on a bracket (3) which is secured by screws (5) to a door jamb (5). A door (7) has secured to it by screws (8) a bracket (9) on which is mounted a U-shaped light pipe (10) made of quartz or acrylic plastics material. In the closed position the respective ends of the pipe (10) are closely adjacent the diodes (1, 2). The diode (1) is excited by signal pulses of predetermined frequency, and detection of these by circuitry associated with the diode (2) indicates that the door is closed. The arrangement may be used as a multi-way contactless switch.
