Abstract

The inlet and outlet pumps operate for continuous renewal of the dialysis bath, feeding the fresh dialysate into the dialyser from the dialysate generator and drawing spent dialysate from the other side of the dialyser. The pump can be of the piston type or the occlusive peristaltic type, one set of rollers pref. acting on flexible tubing connected to both sides of the dialyser. The negative pressure producing the ultrafiltration is generated by a pump of the occlusive type, pref. peristaltic, connected between the outlet of the dialyser and the outlet pump. The inlet and outlet pumps are pref. continuously variable in speed from rest to maximum. Although the principal use of the system is in medical haemodialysis, it can also be used in precision mixing of two liqs., the haemodialyser being replaced by a tapping into the circuit through which the liq. to be mixed with that in the circuit is introduced. The rate of introduction of the second liq. is thus controlled by the rate at which the pumped tapping off is operated. The system permits precise control of the ultrafiltration rate, whether at high dialysate flow rates or with no dialysate flow.
