Abstract
Method comprises measuring continuously the concn. of O2 in the gaseous phase and introducing a flow of gaseous N2 through an inlet at the level of the gaseous phase when the concn. of O2 reaches predetermined value. When the oxidising agent is air enriched in O2, the degree of enrichment is pref. reduced, in addn. to N2 being introduced. The method prevents all risks of inflammation and explosion in a reactor, more partic. a reactor working under severe conditions of pressure and temp. Such risks can arise through: stoppage of the chemical reaction e.g. by poisoning of a catalyst; increase in O2 concn. before the reaction starts; failure of feed of liq. reactants; accidental increase in flow of oxidising agent; a runaway reaction resulting in temp. increase and increase of the molar fraction of organic vapour in the vapour phase.
