Abstract
Floating barrier for contg. oil floating on the surface of water, is constructed such that it is resistant to waves and impact from ships and is therefore capable of serving as a semipermanent installations. The barrier consists of a prim. barrier consisting of a row of box shaped floats linked together and a sec. barrier of similar floats with the gaps between floats displaced relative to those in the first barrier and held at a distance from the primary barrier by means of spacers. The spacers are pref. of rubber or similar material which is capable of absorbing the shock due to an impact with a ship. The individual floats are linked together, preferably by chains and the complete barrier may be anchored to the sea bed in the required position. Barrier is suitable as a permanent protection barrier around an offshore oil installation serving both to retain oil spills and to protect the installation from collision with ships. The design is such that the barrier retains the oil even in severe swells.
