Abstract

The liquid and vapour fractions in a conductive fluid flowing in a conduit are measured by applying a polyphase alternating electric field to the field. A cyclic moving electric field vector is created across the section of the conduit. Resulting currents are measured and summed to derive a conductivity signal indicative of relative phase fractions. The method may be used in boiling or turbulent flow, in fluidised bed or nuclear reactor coolant systems. Measurement can be made under varying flow conditions without disturbing the character of the system being tested.
