Abstract
Asbestos lagging is coated successively with (a) an aq. emulsion of a crosslinkable thermoplastic polymer; (b) a first coating based on synthetic rubber or analogous (co)polymers and mineral fillers, in emulsion or aq. dispersion, this coating being reinforced with fibres; and (c) a second coating (seal), of similar compsn. to (b) but without reinforcer, and of higher concn. Layer (b) can also be applied by first putting on the aq. emulsion or dispersion, then fastening on widths of glass fibre fabric or similar material. This being recommended for relatively flat surfaces. Alternatively, if the surface is undulating, synthetic fibres can be applied together with the aq. dispersion or emulsion. Process is used to protect asbestos thermal and acoustic lagging against deterioration, which is a serous health hazard. Shocks caused by balls in gymnasiums, e.g. can cause asbestos fibres to fall, as can vibrations. Thermal and acoustic insulation properties and fire-resitance are not adversely affected.
