Abstract

The compactness of a material or mixture of materials is required particularly for sand and gravel in order to study composition of concrete. This is performed by measuring mass of given volume of a mixture. Compactness of material is performed by two cylinders (2, 3) each with base (4, 5) and rim (6, 7). The inner cylinder (3) slides in the other with little play in movement. A hole (8) in the inner clinder allows air to escape from lower cylinder containing the mixture. A depth gauge scale (10) giving difference in height between the two cylinders gives direct volumetric reading and is effected after periods of vibration.
