Abstract

Non-ionic surfactants of formula (I) are new: Z-CH2-CHZ-CH2-(OCH2-CHZ-CH2)n -Z (I) (where n is 2-29; each Z is OH or R, 4-25% being R; R is formula -OCH2-CHOH-CH2OR' or is a divalent gp. of formula -O-(CH2-CHR2-O-)q-CH2-CHOH-CH2O-, each end of which acts as an R in (I); R' is 6-20C long chain alkyl or is -(CH2-CHR2-O-)pR3; R2 is H, CH3 or C2H5; R3 is 1-6C alkyl; p is 3-20; q is 6-40; the average O/C atom ratio in (CH2-CHR2-O)q - is not >0.4). (I) have solubility and stability in a variety of conc. ionic solns., esp. in basic media. They may be used in alkaline bottle-washing compsns., in baths for the kier boiling of cotton, alkaline paper-pulp de-inking compsns., electrolytic baths for cleaning metal parts or for electrodeposition textile treating formulations, in shampoos, cosmetics, heavy duty detergents, etc. They may also be used in prodn. of e.g. sulphonated anionic surfactants or other polyoxyalkylated surfactants.
