Abstract
A voltage proportional to the logarithm of the modulus of an alternating signal is fed to the base of a first transistor. The emitter of this transistor is coupled to the output of an operational amplifier and the base of a second transistor of like conductivity type whose emitter is connected to earth. The output of a reference voltage source is connected by a parallel resistance-capacitance circuit to the inverting input of the operational amplifier and the collector of the first transistor and by way of a second resistor to the non-inverting input of the amplifier. The voltage appearing across the first resistor is proportional to the root-mean-square of the input voltage.
