Abstract
Blood corpuscles are electronically counted as they pass through an orifice (18) from changes in conductivity between electrodes (20, 22) on either side. The output pulses that occur in each of a succession of time intervals is found and the sequence of results is subject to statistical analysis to reject extreme or unreliable data. Firstly, the means valves, standard deviation and scatter coefficient are calculated; the latter is then compared with a calculated coefficient, and if it is smaller, then the results are acceptable and the overall mean count is calculated. If it is larger, those counts lying more than 1.4 standard deviations from the mean are rejected. If too many are so rejected, the entire series is rejected.
