Abstract

Slow-release compsns. for oral administration comprise 3 types of granulate (A, B and C) each contg nitrofurantoin (I) and having a particle size of 0.1-1.2 (pref. 0.3-0.8)mm. Granulate A is prepd. with a binder comprising a water-sol. polymer or a polyhydric alcohol. Granulate B is prepd. with a binder comprising a water-insol. cellulose ether. Granulate C is prepd. with a binder comprising a COOH-contg. polymer which is sparingly sol. or practically insol. at the pH of the gastric tract and is also coated with this polymer. The ratio of the (I) content of A, B and C is 0.5:1:2-3. (I) is useful e.g. for the treating cystitis, urethritis, bacteriuria, pyelonephrisits, etc. The compsns. have good resorption characteristics, a long activity duration (2-3 hrs. longer than known macrocrystalline comsns) and reduced side-effects (nausea, diarrhoea, etc.).
