Abstract

A fibrous cellulose, pref. alpha-cellulose, is dissolved in conc. sulphuric acetic, hydrochloric or nitric acid, pref. H2SO4. The cellulosic fibre length is pref. 3-7 mm. 25-250 g fibrous cellulose per litre H2SO4 is pref. used. Phosphoric acid is also pref. added. 0.5-5 wt % of residual black liquir from the mfr. of paper with bisulphite paste can also be added, as well as Al, Fe2+ and Fe3+ salts. The dissolved fibrous cellulose is used in the treatment of used water together with a basic soln. to give a final pH of about 7. The treated water is sepd. from the flocculated products. The method gives improved water quality at reduced installation and operating costs, without using ion-exchange resins, etc..
