Abstract

Optical glass pieces are mfd. from hydrated glass using a precision press moulding tool inside a sealed chamber flooded with an elevated pressure (100-120 bars) of N2, Ar, Kr, CO2 or steam. The moulding tool is pref. housed in an autoclave, the wall of which is traversed in a sealed manner by a press ram, and also by a gas supply duct. Used in the mfr. of lenses and mirrors for optical or opthalmic use. Improved surface finish is obtd. by preventing dehydration during mfr.
