Abstract

A valve used in large scale water treatment plant controls the flow through a hole(1) in a dividing wall(2). A steel frame-work supports an inflatable bag(10) on a steel plate(4) at a short distance away from the hole. When the bag(10) is deflated it lies flat against the plate(4) and allows water to flow through the hole(1). When the bag is inflated it expands across the gap between plate(4) and wall(2) and completely blocks the outlet from the hole(1). The flexibility of the bag ensures a perfect seal around the edge of the hole(1).
