Abstract

The automatic pivoting mechanism is for use on a conveyor belt in the mass prodn. of e.g. automobiles, and pivots a car body shell through 90 deg. The mechanism acts without interrupting the linear flow of the conveyor belt, and presents the underside of the shell to assembly workers. The shell is attached to a pivotable cantilever arm(14) which is mounted(12) on a moving deck(5). The deck is coupled to the top run of a conveyor belt, and the arm pivots about an axis(38) above and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the belt. The belt passes beneath an approximately semi-circular arch(34) with continuous teeth(35) on the intrados and supporting a carriage(37) with pinion-drive(43, 44). The pivoting operation is initiated when rollers(45) on the end of the arm enter a channel section(36) which is built onto the carriage. Motors(41) cut in to move the carriage through a 90 deg. arc, thus, pivoting the arm and the body shell through 90 deg. During pivoting the rollers move along the channel at the rate dictated by the conveyor.
