Abstract

A reducing gear (11-22) located in a housing (2) is actuated by the transporting movement of the ink ribbon of an ink-ribbon cartridge (3). The reducing gear (11-22) moves a visual display device (35) with a marking (37) running past a window (8). After an appropriate number of passes has been reached, the movement of the marking (37) is automatically interrupted. As a result, the number of ink-ribbon passes guaranteeing a degree of blackness of the continuous ink ribbon which is sufficient for producing machine-readable writing is limited with a space-saving arrangement of the ink ribbon in a cartridge.
