Abstract
Membrane used partic. as an electrolytic diaphragm contains (a) a fluorianted a polymer with units of formula (I):- and -CXX1-CFR3-(II), and (b) a non-fluorinated or barely fluorinated polymer (B) contg. units -CR8Ar-CR9R10-(III) and Ar'-('CR11-CR12R13)- (IV). In the formulae, R is -O-CR4R5-CR6R7- (>=1 (>3) of R4-7 being F, the other(s) being 1-10 (4)C linear or branched perfluoroalkyl); n is 1,2,3, or 4; when n >=1, the R gps. can be different; M is H or a metal e.g. Na, and the SO3M gp. is attached To C. R1-3 are each F or 1-10 (4)C linear or branched perflouroalkyl, X is F, Cl, H or CF3; X1 is as X or CF3-(CF2)-z (z being O or an integer 6); R8-12 are each H,F or CH3; and one of R8-10 and one R11-13 can be CF3; Ar is a monovalent aromatic radical; and Ar' is an organic radical with valency p, where p is 2 or 3. The free valencies of units (III) are joined to the free valencies of units (IV) so as to form as tridimensional crosslinked network, and the macromolecules of polymer (a) and those of polymer (b) are interlaced and/or interpenetrated. Membrane is used partic. in the electrolysis of aq. NaCl solns. It has low permeability to OH ions, and its use allows improved yields from the electrolysis.
