Abstract

The construction process entails the placement of a caisson (1) on a prepared submerged foundation (2) and may be deployed in Civil Engineering works e.g. the installation of foundations to bridge piers. The base (10) of the caisson (1) is initially placed on a deformable self-sealing strip bearing (21, 32) delineating a series of rectangular bays, and the bay volumes are then filled with e.g. concrete (61). The process obtains uniform bearing pressures beneath the caisson on roughly levelled formations. The strip bearings (31, 32) may be placed on the formation and comprise bitumen impregnated sand, or may comprise inflatable tubes fixed to the base of the caisson. When the sand/bitumen bearings are used, double sealing skirts (13) may be provided on the base (10) of the caisson. During the first phase of the installation part only of the loads from the caisson are transmitted to the temporary bearings (31, 32), with the full load being allowed to act after the bays have been filled. Lateral displacement of the caisson may be prevented by previously installed piles (5).
