Abstract

The recovery of geothermal heat energy from subterranean rock comprises: drilling the earth with a rock melting drill so as to form two distinct shafts; circulating heat absorbing fluid down one shaft, through the drill and up the other shaft; and recovering heat from the fluid. The appts. includes an electric heating element capable of withstanding a temp. of 1200 degrees C and a drill for forming two shafts and moving some of the rock. The drill is such as to allow passage of a circulating fluid between the shafts. Both shafts are drilled together and communicate without recourse to rock fracturing. Additional piping is not required for the circulating fluid nor for excess rock removal. Excessive mechanical force upon the drill is avoided so drill wear is reduced. The force on the heating element is minimal so they may be fabricated from materials which allow higher temps. to be attained.
