Abstract

A slurry of paper is extracted from household refuse by sepg. and disintegrating the rubbish and subjecting it to sepn. of fibres for papermaking. Before the fibre sepn., the rubbish undergoes an aerobic fermentation. In the improvement the mass of rubbish is enriched in soaps. The soaps are produced in situ by the addn. of an alkali. The enrichment in soaps may also be effected by adding already formed soaps. The mass of rubbish enriched in soaps is agitated thoroughly. During agitation, fragments of plastic and other light materials are carried off by a stream of gas. The agitation may be carried out in a rotating drum with interval vanes through which a stream of gas flows in the same direction as the rubbish. This draws off the fragments of plastic the downstream zone of the drum being perforated so that the cellulose slurry is filtered and separated from coarse non-fibrous matter. The filtered slurry may then be subjected to filtration under pressure. The yield of cellulosic material is increased, and the operating conditions are easier and more economic.
