Abstract
Sheet reinforcing elements are located in the cavity of an injection or transfer moulding tool by engagement with dowels which traverse the mould cavity. Esp. for locating reinforcement panels within polyester resin moulding for non-planar parts such as automobile bumpers. Positive location prevents shifting of the reinforcement inserts by either the mould motions or the resin flow. The holes left by disengagement of the dowels may serve without further treatment as passages for bolts for supporting the moulded component in use. Flat inserts may be used and bent to shape by the mould closing action without risk of lateral slip, thus possibly eliminating an insert preforming operation. Specifically, the dowels are located in sockets having oversize mouths fitted with annular elastic seals to establish alignment and inhibit penetration by the moulding resin. The dowel recesses are vented, and opt. pressurised to assist tool parting after moulding.
