Abstract

The combined mechanical and electromagnetic blocking mechanism may be used on a strong-room lock. The armature (3) is moved onto the electromagnet (2) mechanically, ie. a link (6) associated with the bolt-cage (5) rotates a cam (4), then the electromagnet (2) is energised to lock the armature (3). The arrangement reduces the electric power required to energise the magnet (2). The armature may slide within a sleeve (10) with its movement in opposed directions limited by a flange (30) and the magnet (2) respectively. Movement of the bolt-cage (5) into the closure position pivots the cam (4) until a rounded apex (40) engages and displaces the armature (3) onto the magnet (2). The magnet (2) is now energised and the bolts (5) are effectively blocked at closure. The mechanism may include a reverse bolt (52) which interposes the magnet (2) and the armature (3) when the bolts are withdrawn. When the magnet (2) and the armature (3) are locked together, the later (3) impedes the reverse bolt (52) and prevents bolt (5) withdrawal.
