Abstract

The seal wall is for preventing coastal erosion of a double cantilever construction ie. two parallel vertical slabs (2, 3) cantilever from a common base. Openings (6) in the front slab (2) give the sea access to the cavity (4) which serves as a dissipating chamber. The arrangement reduces the likelihood of waves clearing the wall, and the openings now have specific geometry to cater for different water levels ie. tidal circumstances. The wall functions between designed maximum (N1) and minimum (N2) water levels, and the openings (6) extend from below the minimum level (N2) to the vicinity of the top edge of the front slab. The openings may be of vertically elongated rectangular form, with cross-walls (19) at regular intervals between uniting the two slabs. The rear slab (3) may be higher than the front slab (2) and may have an incurving top edge (7). A mid-height rib may be on the rear wall (3).
