Abstract

Lactone copolymers are prepd. by reacting a lactone polymerisation catalyst comprising an organometallic cpd. with metal alcoholate gps. with a polymer having hydrocarbon chains terminated by OH gps. This results in the organometallic gp. being fixed to the end of the polymer chain by exchange reaction on the alcoholate gp. The polymer with organometallic end gps. is then reacted with a lactone. The process allows the copolymerisation of lactones with other polymers with satisfactory yields (up to 90%). The copolymers are partic. suitable as emulsifying additives in polymer blends comprising a polymer which is compatible with the polylactone, e.g. PVC and a different polymer, e.g. polystyrene, which the additive renders compatible with the PVC.
