Abstract

The avalanche-shed for use in coastal or mountainous areas protects a through route (1) or a parking area from falling rock. The roof comprises a contiguous slab (6) overlain by a robust grid (3). The grid guage protects the slab from rocks above a specified size, and the shock-absorbers (8) are located between the grid and the slab. The shock-absorbers may comprise rubber pads, may be elastically deformable, and may be designed to prevent the structural deformation of the slab roof (6) and the sub-structure. Transverse timber baulks (10) can form the protective grid and the lower roof may be of a reinforced concrete beam (9) and slab (6) construction.
