Abstract

Radioactive decontamination of part is effected by applying a decontaminating gel to its surface, them removing it. The gel pref. has a viscosity of >=350 cP. It can be a glycerophthalic gel contg. a soln. of decontaminant, obtd. by reacting a 1:4 or 1:1 molar mixt. of phthalic anhydride and glycerol. Alternatively, it can be a glycerophosphoric gel, obtd. by reaction of an equimolar mixt. of glycerol and phosphoric acid; a cellulosic gel, e.g. obtd. by reaction of cellulose acetate, ethylene glycol, and acetic acid; a PVA gel; a silica gel, e.g. a silico-ethyl acetate gel; or an alumina gel. It can be applied by spray gun, and rinsed off with water, or allowed to dry and removed mechanically. The method overcomes the disadvantages of mechanical methods (which involve surface modification, and are difficult to apply to parts of complicated shape) and chemical methods (which lead to the production of large vols. of effluent and are difficult to apply to large parts). Low quantities of decontaminant are required, and the viscosity of the gel allows contact for the needed time for decontamination.
