Abstract

Pipe couplings, comprising tubular sleeves of rubber reinforced with one or more layers of helically wound cords and for joining rigid or semi-rigid pipe of external dia. D, are characterised as follows: a length/dia. ratio of 0.5-2, a wall thickness of 0.006-0.09 D pref. 0.015-0.035 D, an axial compressibility of >=1.25 x 10-4 pref. >5 x 10-3 cm./kg., and a tensile strength >=20D, pref. >=50D kg. The cords are made of fibres having a modulus of >=4 x 107 kg./cm2 and are wound at an angle of 45-70 degrees, pref. 55-75 degrees to the sleeve axis. The matrix rubber should have a moduli of >=1.75 kg./cm2 at 100% elongation, >=3.5 kg./cm2 at 300% elongation, a tensile strength of >=20 kg./cm2 and a hardness of 15-90, pref. 15-70 Shore A. The internal layer of the sleeve should have a coefficient of friction of >=0.7, pref. >=0.8 with the pipe surface. The tear resistance of the sleeve should be >=1 kgf./linear cm. Used esp. for coupling lengths of PVC or ABS conduit for enclosing telephone cables, where coupled conduit must be pulled or bent during installation and resist the stresses of subsequently having cables drawn through the conduits. The couplings are readily assembled without involving special tools, hot welding or (flammable) solvents. The force necessary to assemble the couplings is significantly less than that needed to part the joints, by a ratio of =1:3, pref. =1:8.
