Abstract

Treatment of coal to facilitate magnetic removal of impurities (pyrites and/or ash-forming minerals) comprises contacting the coal simultaneously with (a) a metal cpd. capable of increasing the magnetic susceptibility of the impurities and (b) H2 or CO. Unlike the analogous process carried out in the absence of H2 or CO the present process is applicable to all types of coal.
