Abstract
Yttrium recovery from aq. rare-earth metal (REM) chlorides soln. comprises mixing the soln. with (A) a neutral organic extn. agent and (B) a salting out agent (I) or thiocyanate (II) ions to form a raffinate contg. Y and as extract contg. the lanthanides. The raffinate contains 0.7-2.2 mole/l REM and 1.1-6 mole/l (I) or has a molar ratio of REM to (II) of 3.5:1-230:1. The extn. agent (A) is pref. a sulphoxide of m.wt. 129-244 in a non polar diluent pref. kerosene, a xylene or polyalkylbenzene. The salting out agent is pref. a chloride of Li, Mg, Ca or Al. The extn. is used in processing ores e.g. xenotime, parasite, and tailings from processing uranium raw materials.
