Abstract

Electrolysis system for manufacturing chemicals are housing round which an electrolyte is circulated. Inside is a particulate electrode with insoluble conductor lines. Means of removing sludge and electrolysis products are provided. The particles are made from an electrically conducting material. The housing has electrically insulated walls contg. the particles into which are mounted the insoluble conductor lines. In contact with the electrolytes, the particles form layers of reduced conductivity. When a potential is appled to the conductors, this creates a bipolar effect on each of the particles. the housing is of reduced dia. in its upper section causing an acceleration of the electrolyte upwards propelled by the gas generated during the process. One of the conductors can be movable. Used with electrolytic processes making oxidising agents such as permanganates, dromates, dichromates and of Cl-O cpds. such as chlorates and hyporchlorites. Provides a compact electrolyser of high capacity which operates like a number of individual baths linked in series. A strong current can be applied to a large electrode surface on the particles, and use is made of a bipolar effect.
