Abstract

New (cyclo)aliphatic polycarbonates of mol. wt. =3000 include hydrocarbon radicals of is not 4C and may contain (thio)ether bridges; they also have two (methy)acrylic end-gps. Polycarbonates are susceptible to self-polymerisation on heating or under u.v. radiation to give transparent films with many end-uses, but esp. as lacquers for papers for use as playing cards, wrappers, etc. A hydroxytelechelic aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polycarbonate is a esterified with a slight excess of (meth)acrylic acid in presence of an inert aromatic solvent that forms an azeotrope with water, in presence of a polymerisation inhibitor and an acid catalyst. Reaction takes place under reflux with regular removal of the azeotrope. Polycarbonates easy to apply since many of them are liq. Also they are chemically neutral and therefore can be applied to most natural or synthetic supports.
