Abstract

A triac in series with an AC mains supply switches and controls a motor in household goods such as a washing machine. Parasitic RF radiation and motor torque variations are reduced by a current inversion detector circuit in series with the mains supply. An alternating current flowing in a motor (3) via a triac (5) develops a voltage across a low value resistor (4) with shunt diodes (6, 7) and connected to two conductor rails (11, 31). This voltage is applied to two transistors (29, 30) whose bases are connected to two conductor rails (10, 11) forming a current inversion detector. The transistors alternately conduct and are blocked depending on polarity of voltage across the resistor (4). The triac conducts only when both transistors conduct together.
