3-Methylenecephalosporanic acid derivs. of formula (II) are new R1 is acylamido or acylimido, the acyl moiety is opt. substd. and includes aliphatic acyl (formyl, acetyl), aliphatic acyl contg. an O or S atom (methoxyacetyl, methylthioacetyl), aromatic acyl (benzoyl, alpha-methylnaphthoyl) and heterocyclic acyl (1H-(or 2H)-tetrazolylacetyl, thienylacetyl. R2 R3 and R4 are H or monovalent organic gp. e.g., aliphatic hydrocarbon, alicyclic hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon, heterocyclic group, protected hydroxyl, protected thiocarboxyl, protected amino, etc.; or 2 of R2, R3 and R4 together form a ring.
