Abstract

Prodn. of modified emulsions of plastic binders (specif. bitumen emulsions) comprises treating an anionic emulsion of the binder sequentially with (a) a redox reagent, opt. together with a hydrolysed protein material, (b) an acid or acidic salt, and (c) a demulsifier comprising an elastomer latex and/or an alkaline earth metal (hydr)oxide and/or an organic solvent. The emulsions can be incorporated in hydraulic or bituminous concrete formulations to reduce plastic deformation (of the latter), suppress cracking (of the former), increase adhesion and provide permanent surface roughness.
