Abstract

The racemic mists. obtd. by recrystn. of 1- 4-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-phenyl -2- 1-(p-methoxyphenyl)-2- -propylamino -ethanol (I), and their sulphate salts, are new. The ceramic mixts. of (I) are sepd. by recrystn. from isopropanol. One of the racemic mixts. (A) is a smooth-muscle relaxant (bronchorelaxant and uterorelaxant) with no cardiac stimulant activity. Its activity vs. bronchial contractions induced by BaCl2 is higher than that of salbutamol and isoprenaline. The other mixt. (B) has little or no broncho-relaxant activity. Unlike recrystn. from EtOAc (as in Parent Patent), recrystn, from isopropanol allows both racemic mixts. to be isolated and gives a purer mixt. (A).
