Abstract

Prodn. of ethylene comprises hydrocracking (hydrogenolysis) of ahydrocarbon feed boiling in the 0-360 degrees C range an and contg. >=10 wt. % C4+n-paraffins and >=10 wt. % C4+ isoparaffins, followed by steam cracking at the C2-3 prod. Hydrocracking is carried out in a series of >=2 reaction zones each operating at 300-550 degrees C, 10-150 bars, LHSV of 0.2-5 and an H2/feed ratio of 300-3000 Nl/l. The temp. in each downstream zone is 5-25 degrees C higher than that in the preceding zone. The 1st zone contains an acidic mordenite catalyst contg. 0.01-25% of Ni, CO and 1 or Fe. The downstream zone(s) contain(s) a catalyst comprising 0.01-25% of >=1 Pt-group metal on a support comprising SiO2, Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3 or a zeolite. The effluent from each hydrocracking zone is fractionated into an H2 stream, a CH4 stream, a C2-3 fraction (ethane + propane) and a C4+ fraction. Each C4+ fraction is passed to the next zone or, in the case of the last zone, is recycled to >=1 preceding zone. THe C2-3 fractions are combined and passed to a steam cracking zone. Steam cracking is carried out at 700-850 degrees C, 1-1.4 bar, a residence time of 0.2-1.2 sec and an H2/hydrocarbon wt. ratio of 0.25-0.4. cf. process employing one-stage hydrocracking with steam cracking of the total effluent, the process gives higher ethylene yields (e.g. 46.6% cf 42.9%) and reduced CH4 formation (e.g. 36.2% cf 40.4).
