Abstract

An abrasive compsn. for cleaning hard surfaces consists of: (a) 0.1-15 wt.% of a surfactant (not cationic), (b) 1-65 wt.% of an abrasive material based on powdered expanded perlite almost all of which comprises particles having one dimension between 1-190 u the material having an apparent density of 48-480 g/dm3 and contg. 2% (pref. 1%) of non-expanded perlite and (c) a charge, constituting the rest of the compsn. selected from among inorganic alkali salts, water and their mixtures. If liq. compsns. contain 0.1-7% surfactant, 2-25% abrasive material and 1-30% of an agent which keep the abrasive material dispersed in the liquid, the rest being a mixture of water and inorganic salts contg. 10-90 wt.% of water. In particular such liquid compsns. contain 1% of non-expanded perlite and the suspending agent is a colloid-forming clay selected from attapulgites, smectites and their mixts. The compsns. may also contain 0.1-10 wt.% of a bleaching agent to which the surfactant is stable. In this case, the abrasive forms 3-15% by wt. of the compsn. and the bleaching agent yields a hypochlorite species in aq. soln. The salt or salts used act as a buffer to maintain the pH at 10.5-12.5; their concn. is 1-15% by wt. of the compsn. In particular, (a) the surfactant is a water-soluble 8-18C alkyl sulphate, (b) the range of dimensions of the perlite is 20-110 mu, (c) the salt is a water-sol. carbonate, bicarbonate, sesquicarbonate, silicate, pyrophosphate, phosphate, tetraborate or mixt. therefore, (d) the bleaching agent is a hypochlorite, chloramine, chlorimine, chloramide or chlorimide, at conc. of 0.2-5 wt.% and (e) the suspending agent is a smectite.
