Abstract

Adhesives for human hard tissue comprise (a) a radical-polymerisable monomer and (b) a hardener comprising a peroxide, an amine (or amine salt) and a sulphinic acid salt (I). Component (a) pref. comprises one or more (meth)acrylate esters. The peroxide is pref. a diacyl (esp. benzoyl) peroxide. The amine is pref. a sec. or tert. aromatic amine (I) is pref. an arylsulphinate (esp. benzenesulphinate) salt. The adhesives are esp. useful as dental fillings, but can also be used on bone, e.g. to treat compound fractures or fix artificial joints. The adhesives have a higher bonding strength (up to 100 kg/cm2) and set more rapidly than similar compsns. contg. peroxide/amine hardeners, and are more stable than compsns. contg. peroxide/sulphonic acid hardenes (cf. GB 1130653 and US 3926906) A typical compsn. comprises methyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, polymethyl methacrylate N,N'-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-p-toluidine, p-toluenesulphinic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
