Abstract

A foaming process for plastic materials, partic. for polymers with ester links such as polycarbonates and polytere-phthalates, involves the addn. of oligomers, polymers and/r copolymers of organic cpds. which depolymerise to liberate formaldehyde. Such foaming agents are pref. oligomers, polymers and/or copolymers of formaldehyde and/or of trioxane. They can be introduced into the plastic material as mixts. with other additives. The agents are readily available, and unlike conventional foaming agents, do not sensibly affect the molecular wt. of polymers with ester linkages. They can be chosen to decompose at a temp. near to the treatment temp. of the plastic material. They are useful for the treatment of waste polymeric materials.
