Abstract

Opto electric ignition system for IC engine for use with an ignition coil includes a photo-detector which will conduct when exposed to radiation; a radiation source; an opaque element having apertures or slots therein positioned between the radiation source and the photo-detector. Means for rotating the opaque element in timed relation to the engine revolutions and a transistorised ignition circuit having a several switching Darlington pairs connected between the photo-detector and the ignition coil, and switching in inverse relation to the one another are provided. The first Darlington pair of the circuit also switches in inverse relation to the photo-detector. On the energisation or de-energisation of the photo-detector, the transistorised ignition circuit causes fast switching of the primary winding of the ignition coil to induce the spark voltage in the secondary winding.
